Local UNIX users—that is, a UNIX user that is created on a virtual server—can be used for Windows-to-UNIX and UNIX-to-Windows name mappings. To create a local UNIX user, use the services unix-user new command. Local UNIX users are specific to the virtual server on which they are created and are not accessible by other virtual servers on the Data ONTAP 10.0 system.
When you create a local UNIX user, you specify a virtual server, a user name, a user ID, and a primary group ID. You can optionally specify the user's full name. The following example creates a local UNIX user named betty on a virtual server named vs0. The user has the ID 123 and the primary group ID 100. The user's full name is "Elizabeth Boop".
node::>services unix-user new -vserver vs0 -user betty -id 123 -primary-gid 100 -full-name "Elizabeth Boop"
The services unix-user show command displays the following information about local UNIX users:
Virtual server name
User name
User ID
Primary group ID
Full name, if available
Other information is displayed in a detailed view and if other parameters are specified. See the reference page for the command for details.
The following example displays information about all local UNIX users.
node::>services unix-user showVirtual User User Group Full Server Name ID ID Name vs0 betty 123 100 Elizabeth Boop vs0 bob 4673 100 Robert Smith vs0 fred 2345 100 Fred Fennell vs0 jake 0 100 Jacob Melvin vs0 ted 4444 100 Theodore Geisel vs10 alex 1234 10 - vs10 jake 0 12 -
You can load one or more local UNIX users into a virtual server from a uniform resource identifier (URI) by using the services unix-user load-from-uri command. The URI must contain user information in the UNIX /etc/passwd format:
user_name:password:user_ID:group_ID:full_name
The command discards the value of the password field and of the fields after the full_name field (home_directory and shell).
The following example loads user information from the URI ftp://ftp.example.com/passwd onto a virtual server named vs0. Existing users on the virtual server are not overwritten by information from the URI.
node::>services unix-user load-from-uri -vserver vs0 -uri ftp://ftp.example.com/passwd -overwrite false
To modify a local UNIX user, use the services unix-user modify command. The command can modify the user's ID, primary group ID, or full name. The following example modifies a user named betty on a virtual server named vs0 to have the user ID 167:
node::>services unix-user modify -vserver vs0 -user betty -id 167
